Located in front of the 1890 Courthouse in Green Cove Springs, the dedication ceremony for the monument will be Monday, October 9, 2017 11:00 a.m. at 915 Walnut, Green Cove Springs. Descendants, family members of the fallen, and the public are invited to attend. The dedication ceremony marks the end of a several years long project dedicated to memorializing Clay County’s fallen military veterans. Back in August of 2015, the Taps Committee (made up of veterans and volunteers and named after the bugle call played at military funerals) presented the project to the Clay County Board of Commissioners and received unanimous approval. Since then, the team lead by Gary Newman (President of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter #1059) met every month at the 1890 Courthouse to hash out logistics, fundraising and whose names were to be etched on the display. Since then, the Taps Committee conducted fundraising and executed the project plan. The money for the monument came from donations and fundraisers. No taxpayer dollars were used. Local citizens and businesses all pitched in with donations and volunteer hours. 11-year old Coppergate Elementary students Nate Helmuth and Isaac Davis, along with Media Specialist Kimberly Miskowski, all received citizenship awards from the American Security Council Foundation. Ready for for Some Some Football? Football? Ready One of the most difficult project jobs fell to the members of the Names Committee. Their goal was to be both inclusive and conclusive in listing the names of the veterans. The criteria were fairly simple: the individual had a strong Clay County connection (lived in Clay County/family in Clay County) and a death that occurred in theatre (in action).
