Names of the honorees are embroidered on a tapestry which hangs in the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library. Reservations are required ( please---by Jan. 23). Tickets are $30 (includes tax and tip) and can be purchased from Tilda De Wolfe (626-280-0479 – alldewolfe@ hotmail.com ), or by mail at UDC, P.O. Box 954, Monterey Park, CA 91754. UDC To Honor Two Local Residents APA Bars Honors Local Attorney With ‘Trailblazer’ Award Page 5 Jasmine Sunda Pedro Chan The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association has conferred the “Trailblazer” award to former Monterey Park mayor, attorney G. Monty Manibog at its recently held annual convention and awards banquet in Atlanta on Nov. 18. NAPABA is an organization comprising all Asian Pacific American bar associations, including the Philippine American Bar Association and Manibog was one of only nine “trailblazer” awardees recognized and honored for their extraordinary accomplishments and contributions in the legal profession. Manibog, as is true of the other 8 “trailblazers,” was featured on a giant TV screen on stage of the convention hall where his accomplishments were featured through photos and narration prior to appearing at the podium to receive his award and delivering a brief speech. Manibog was previously cited for bringing about a change in immigration law by his precedent-setting case of May Retino, a nutritionist from the Philippines, whose rejection as a “professional” for immigration purposes was reversed by the Board of Immigration Appeals, which favorably affected nutritionists world wide. He was also cited for his leadership role in opposing the divisive “English only” measure by debating the English Only advocates at Harvard University’s JFK School of Government and also being among the first Filipino American mayors and councilmen in the continental US. Manibog continues to practice law with his youngest son, Darren, under the firm name of Manibog & Manibog LLP, which is now located at 5410 East Beverly Boulevard, in Los Angeles.
