Chinese New Year celebrations in Monterey Park will be held Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 28 and Jan. 29 under a new event organizer. The event coordinator is the World Journal, a Chinese language daily newspaper based in Monterey Park. The newspaper recently reached an agreement with the sponsoring city of Monterey Park and the Downtown Business Improvement District. The announcement was made at a city hall press conference on Dec. 2 attended by James Guo, president of the World Journal, and Monterey Park City Officials including Vice Mayor Mitchell Ing, council members Betty Tom Chu and Teresa Real Sebastian. Mayor David Lau and Councilman Anthony Wong did not attend because they are on a trip to China. Steven Lam, president of the Business Improvement District board invited all the community to plan on participating. Guo announced that the two-day festival would have music, entertainment, cultural activities and more than a 100 vendor booths. Vendor booths are currently available at a price of $600. BID area business people and non-profit organizations will receive a 25 percent discount, they announced. World Journal has held its own Chinese New Year celebrations at its Monterey Park headquarters at Corporate Center. Gou said more than 20,000 people attended the festival last year. The Monterey Park Festival is a two-day event that usually draws about 50,000 people. Last year’s celebration was marred by a dispute over the early closure of the event because of Preparing for An Emerrgency An altercation occurred between city staff and a religious group that was participating in the event. As a result, there was heated discussions at two following council meetings that resulted in an apology from then mayor Betty Tom Chu. If emergency responders need to communicate with people, it will be very difficult without power. In the hardest hit areas, emer -gency workers will have to go door-to-door to check on people and pass out vital information. It would certainly be difficult to implement a mass scale emer -gency response immediately, but within 24-hours, they should be in place. SoCal Edison reported they sent people out door-to-door to pass out information to residents – but that was not until the third day of power outages. As for going out to search for emergency supplies, local streets were blocked off by large trees and branches. Kent Shocknek, early morning anchorman for KCBS, Channel 2 News, speaking at the Rose Queen Luncheon Tuesday, told about his efforts to get to work at 4 a.m. in the morning. He drove a four-wheel drive vehicle over neighbors’ lawns as he zig-zagged around fallen trees and power lines. There are many stories floating around about personal incidents and power outages. Although not really reported in the major news-papers there were lengthy power outages in Rosemead, Monterey Park and Montebello. Several friends and relatives had to dump the contents of their refrigerator after three days without electricity. Others had to check into a hotel – outside of town—to shower, change, eat and get some sleep in a warm environment. Can you just imagine what it will be like when the really BIG earthquake hits southern California? I am getting ready with some basic emergency supplies and searching for a place in my home or yard where I can get them if needed. I am not sure of how I am going to do this, but I’ll have to do some research on the subject. Unfortunately, it looks like you and I am going to have to look after ourselves. What are you going to do about preparing for the BIG ONE? West Valley Journal www.sgvjournal.com Published monthly on the second week of each month. David Barron, Editor & Publisher.
