fitness & nutrition Jumping to Conclusions Jumping “It’s boring.” “I never see results.” “There’s no time.” Do these excuses sound familiar? These are just a few of the myriad excuses we come up with to avoid exercising. As a personal trainer, I hear this common refrain of excuses about why people cannot begin, or stick to, their exercise routines. To Conclusions: By Steve Kaminsky CPT, NASM 1 No MotivatioN: There are only so many Lady Gaga and Rocky themes to fill up our MP3 players. Where can we turn when “One Shining Moment” just doesn’t do it anymore? g SolutioN: Recruit a partner. A workout buddy is an excellent motivational tool. Challenge a friend who is always telling you how unhappy they are with their weight. Should you hire the services of a personal trainer or perhaps your canine? That’s right, get your pet involved! Take Fido on a brisk walk or jog. 2 Never See reSultS: This is a biggie for many people. Why kill ourselves for nothing? Where’s the overnight dream body I was promised? g SolutioN: Unfortunately, real results take months of work, so set smaller goals. Results come in all shapes and sizes. Look for other signs like increased energy, more confidence, and better sleep. Your goals should expand beyond aesthetics. 3 No tiMe: Have you ever sacrificed “me time” for work, your spouse, or the kids? You do not have to feel guilty when you set some time for yourself. This will actually result in a happier – and yes healthier – you! g SolutioN: It’s about prioritizing the day’s activities. We all deserve at least twenty to thirty minutes per day for ourselves. Walk to the train instead of driving. 36 EQUANIMITY | FALL EDITION 2011
