FR ONTLINES Emotional needs in cancer care A diagnosis of cancer can be overwhelm- ing. Ordinary concerns are often put on hold while important decisions are made and treat- ments begun—treatments that can have a debilitating affect on an individual’s mental and emotional health. A recent report conducted by the Institute of Medicine and entitled “Cancer Care for the Whole Patient: Meeting Psychosocial Health Needs,” recommends that cancer care providers screen patients at initial visits for signs of distress. They further suggest care workers connect patients in need with health care providers who can treat distress, and call for periodic re-evaluations.
