Q A For Your Skinformation. Baldness runs in my family, and my hair is thinning on top. My cousin told me that she has been getting injections of her own blood into her scalp, and it is helping to grow new hair. It sounds a little sketchy to me, but she goes to a reputable doctor so I’m thinking maybe there’s something to it. What do you think? Hair loss is one of the most frequent concerns that our patients have. It runs in many families and aff ects both men and women, and it is a topic of great interest and research. The treatment that your cousin is getting is called “PRP,” and it involves injecting specifi cally the platelet component of your blood into the area of hair loss. A recent study showed that PRP resulted in a signifi cant improvement in hair growth. We recommend PRP, one treatment a month for 4 months and then some maintenance once or twice a year, for our patients as an important part of their hair loss treatment. Q I read about a new product that is used to help with little lines on and around the lips, but which is supposed to look very natural. It sounds like exactly what I want, but I still worry that my lips will look too big and puff y, which is just not me. What do you think of this new treatment? It’s Juvéderm Volbella®, ideal when a natural appearance is important. This soft, light dermal fi ller smooths lips, adds subtle volume and a glossy hydrated, velvety look. Volbella® softens “smoker’s lines” without bulking up the skin on the upper lip to improve the lips’ appearance without adding signifi cant volume. Often lips defl ate, invert and lose their 3-D contour. Volbella® helps address wrinkles, asymmetry and the dynamic nature of the mouth. We often combine fi llers for patients who want both volume and smoothing. Volbella®, a hyaluronic acid fi ller, can be reversed if you don’t like the results. It has a great nickname -“lipstick in a syringe”. A © 2014 Skin Spectrum ® Jody Comstock, M.D. Tina Pai, M.D. 520.797.8885 6127 N. La Cholla Blvd., Suite 101 skinspectrum.com
