Great Ways To Go Green With Your Pet! By: Desiree Arsenault The Calgary Humane Society is issuing an exciting challenge this Earth Day encouraging all members, staff and volunteers to ‘go green’ with your pet. Making a conscious decision to ‘go green’ with your pet could include purchasing organic or recycled toy products. This helps reduce the amount of waste seen in our landfills, and will encourage the use of sustainably grown materials in production. Buying recycled litter such as ‘Yesterday’s News’, a kitty litter that is made from recycled newspaper, can be dually beneficial. It reduces landfill waste and prevents strip mining; a very destructive form of mining that is used in the collection of clay for more frequently used kitty litters. Purchasing natural grooming products for your pets can reduce the number of phosphates that are released back into our water systems. Phosphates have been scrutinized for their ability to encourage growth of a Chytrid fungus which infects the skin of native aquatic frogs, and eventually causes death. 2 Another way to ‘go green’ with your pet is making the switch to organic pet food. This switch can benefit the environment and your pet’s health. Organically grown vegetables reduce the amount of pesticide use in the environment, and switching to organically grown pet food reduces or eliminates your pets consumption of chemicals, animal by-products, added salt, added sugar, artificial food colourings or flavours and fillers, thus providing your pet with a longer, healthier life. The ultimate way to encourage people to ‘go green’ with their pet would be to adopt one. This is the greatest form of recycling. By encouraging others to adopt a pet you are saving two lives. You are encouraging families to provide for a loving, cuddly companion, and you’re able to help a new animal by freeing a space in our shelter. Challenge your family this Earth Day and when you are saving the planet don’t forget, ‘GO GREEN’ with your pet.
