Student demand exceeds space in Viera High Academy for Digital Arts & Media BY DAVE BERMAN With highly rated programs in visual design and broadcast television already in place, Viera High School has taken an addition leap in starting The Academy for Digital Arts & Media. The 43 freshmen in the program choose a track in either visual design or broadcast television, and take four years’ worth of classes in that concentra- tion. They also have designated English and social studies teachers for their four years at Viera High, with curriculums from those classes tied into their media concentration. BY DAVE BERMAN Despite dubious weather, the launch teams were able to get their rockets off the ground. Launch day, Dec. 4, was an exciting morning for sixth-grade students of Quest Elementary School's science/math teacher Maria Leaman and lan- guage arts/social studies teacher Orlando, FL Permit No. 753 Presort Std U.S. Postage PAID Cheryl Harmon, as they saw their model rockets blast off from a mini-launch pad set up behind the school. Thanks to a $500 Brevard Schools Foundation Bright Ideas grant, the sixth-grade classes participated in a special rocket unit deployed in teams of three or four students each. Sixth-graders built and launched rockets while learning a range of math and science skills. They set up their rockets on the pad, while measuring wind speed and direction. In unison, the students counted down to launch time. Most of the rockets took off on the first try.
