Page 2 NEWS:The Labour Party Conference U-TURN: Jack Straw to face BNP in TV debate Jack Straw, the Justice Secretary, will be the first senior Labour figu- re to face Nick Griffin, the British National Party leader in a televi- sion debate. Mr Straw said that he will represent the Labour Party in a contro- versial edition of the BBC’s Question Time pro- gramme next month. The BBC announced earlier this month that Mr Griffin will be invi- ted to appear on Question Time after the BNP took two seats in the European Parliament elections this year. The decision was criti- cised by some anti- racism campaigners. Some Labour MPs argued that the party should boycott the show in a “no platform” pro- test at the BNP’s views on race and immigra- tion. When the decision to invite the BNP on the show was announced, Denis Macshane, a Labour MP and former Europe minister, said: “I hope no Labour MP indulges this irresponsi- ble gimmick by the BBC.” But on Sunday, Mr Straw, the MP for Blackburn, rejected such MOVING BACK HOME? RINKENS International Moving R.I.M. POWER COUPLE: both Peter Mandelson and Jack Straw had previously refused to debate with the far-right BNP calls and said he will appear on the show with Mr Griffin. The show will be filmed in London on October 22 and screened on the same day. The BNP is active in Lancashire, and Mr Straw said he believed that the best way to res- pond to their advances was by rebutting their arguments. He said: “Wherever we have had BNP problems in my area and when we have fought them hard, we’ve pulled back and won the seats back. And that’s what we have to do. We’ve got to make the argument for people and I am delighted to do so.” Mr Straw announced his decision as Labour started its annual confe- rence in Brighton. Opening the conferen- ce, Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister, told a group of Labour parlia- mentary candidates that they must focus on hal- ting the rise of the BNP. “In every single consti- tuency, whichever part of the country, our candida- tes have a major role to play,” Mr Brown said. “Take on the Conservatives, take on the Liberals, take on the nationalists, take on every independent and take on the BNP and make sure they have no part in the future to play in the democratic politics of our country.” 171 Pier Avenue, Ste. 121• Santa Monica, CA90405 (Mailing Address Only: Sorry, NOTopen for drop-in advertisers!)
