When efforts by the holder of unclaimed property, such as a city government, to locate the rightful owner fail, the funds must be turned over to the State Treasurer for safeguarding. Common examples for cities include unclaimed deposits and uncashed checks. Negative reports stating the city does not hold any unclaimed property are not required to be filed. The annual report must be submitted electronically using software available on the State Treasurer’s Web site at www.greatiowatreasurehunt.com.
