Small City Workshops being held now

The League is hosting its annual Small City Workshops at six locations around the state in june. The series is designed to provide information and guidance for small city officials and this year's workshop topics include Human Resources Management for Small Cities and The Balancing Act: Diversifying Revenues and Becoming More Efficient.

AH workshops are scheduled for 5:30-8 p.m., and the cost is $35 (dinner is included). More information and online registration is available at www.iowaleague.org.

Seeking loss control representative

Due to continued growth of the program, the Iowa League of Cities is seeking another Loss Control Representative designated to work with the Iowa Municipalities Workers' Compensation Association. The position reports to the Loss Control Coordinator and serves as a consultant to assist members with risk management and loss control related issues. Executive Board highlights

The Iowa League of Cities Executive Board met Thursday, April 17at the League's office in Des Moines. Among the items addressed by the board were:

• Conducted the Executive Director performance evaluation and Board Self-Assessment.

• Approved financial statements for january 2014.

• Accepted Alliant Energy as a new Partner Program.

• Approved a contract for auditing services and an agreement with TrueNorth.

• Discussed the proposed FY2014/15 League budget and approved a membership dues increase.

• Received a legislative update, a report from the Education Committee and a presentation on Tax Increment Finance.

• Approved the Site Selection Committee's recommendation to enter contracts for Waterloo to host the 2018 Annual Conference & Exhibit.

• Instructed staff to finalize the Certified Election Municipal Official program. Minutes from Executive Board meetings are available online at www.iowaleague.org

Municipal professional classes

The Office of State and Local Government Programs (OSLGP) offers training at the Iowa Municipal Professionals Institute (MPI) and Academy (MPA). Online registration must be done in advance of all sessions and is available at www.extension.iastate.edu/communities/OSLGP/MPI-MPA. Payment may be submitted during online registration using credit cards or mailed c/o Iowa League of Cities; 500 SW 7th Street, Des Moines, IA 50309. The registration deadline is july 7 for MPI and july 16 for MPA.

MPI is july 14-18 and july 21-23, designed specifically for Iowa government employees. Each student has the opportunity to meet a wide variety of municipal professionals and interact with the speakers. Cost depends on the coursework selected. There is a recommended course for first year students.

MPA, held july 23-25, is advanced training for city staff. This two-day educational program has a wide range of courses applicable for all city sizes and can provide up to 15 hours of credit towards certification or recertification.

The Gateway Hotel and Conference Center in Ames is the location for all courses. A block of rooms is reserved if you indicate you are with MPI/MPA. A list of alternative housing is included with the registration material on the MPI/MPA Web site. Students are encouraged to car pool to keep costs down.
