These features leave more space in the fridge for food and centralize all the soda, juice, wine and beer for easy access. C AB IN E TRY AN D C O U N T ERTO P S Until recently, dark woods, such as mahogany and cherry, were in demand. Now white is the word. “It’s a dramatic change just over the past year. Nine out of ten customers are asking for a white kitchen. Those who are doing wood are choosing gray tones instead of brown,” says Prudence Stoddard, certi ied kitchen designer and director of design at Rhode Island Kitchen and Bath. As for style, the Shaker in luence is big. “People are asking for simple, understated, lat panels with just a little detail,” Stoddard says. Soft-close drawers and doors and roll-out organizers are very much in demand as well. Corner cabinet design has gotten smarter and replaced the old lazy Susan with a kidney-shaped pullout that uses space more e iciently. In keeping with the airy look, Davitt says they’re now installing a row of one-foot-tall upper cabinets with glass doors. “ We’re doing a lot of these instead of leaving that space open or building in a so it. Puck lights serve as night lighting when you don’t want the big task light on, and some people display a few accent pieces there.” There’s more varied demand in counter-tops, with more requests for hardwoods and manmade materials such as Silestone for its consistent color and modern style. Granite is still very popular, but people are asking for a matte inish rather than glossy. One-piece motion-activated and touch faucets are in high demand for their clean look, and they literally keep things clean, too. Dis-guising plugs is another big request made pos-sible by cool new outlets that pop out of the countertop then push back down out of sight. A PPL I A N CE S Consumers are searching for better quality, says Leah MacLeod, owner of Iz Schwartz Appliance in Somerset, Massachusetts. “They may have had a bad experience with an appliance needing service within a few years of purchase or needed to replace an appliance that did not last as long as they expected. There are de initely models that are sturdier with better quality parts, and we always try to let people know what the most reliable products are.
