On Friday 15th May 2009 the legendary Jack Nicklaus paid a visit to Irish Shores to open his second signature course in Ireland at Killeen Castle near Dublin. Built to provide the sternest of Championship challenges while remaining playable by the average golfer, Jack has created 18 spectacular holes at Killeen each with its own unique features. It truly is a Nicklaus Gem. Killeen Castle Golf Club boasts a magnificent Castle Estate with golf, fishing and splendid facilities including the first Dave Pelz Academy in Europe. Congratulations to Christy Sr. who played with and against JB Carr for many years and who will make a formidable pairing at the world’s highest roll call. Jack Nicklaus was JB’s inductee in 2007. Ladies Irish Open at Portmarnock The most important women’s event in Irish golf takes place from June 26th-28th when the AIB Ladies Irish Open, supported by Fáilte Ireland and Killeen Castle, once again visits Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links. After the success of last years tournament a high class field will again be in action, including the legendary Laura Davies, Sophie Gustafson, Gwladys Norcera, Maria Hjorth and new faces of Ladies Professional golf such as Maria Verchenova, Melissa Reid and Marianne Skarpnord. The LIO tournament director is Roddy Carr who commented: ‘We invited Laura Davies back to the AIB Ladies Irish Open to acknowledge her legendary status and contribution to the women’s game in Ireland. Her recent form in Australia indicates that she is still very competitive against the many emerging lionesses on tour and I expect her to contend for the title at Portmarnock.’ The AIB Ladies Irish Open is also delighted to announce that it is supporting The Marie Keating Foundation’s sun exposure awareness campaign and will be donating all revenue from ticket sales to the foundation.
