Q A Your Skinformation My daughter showed me a new skin cream that she’s been using which contains an ingredient called “growth factor.” She loves it and thinks I should use it too, but it’s quite expensive and I would like to know more about this growth factor and whether it is worth using. Growth factors are substances that are produced by our own cells which stimulate skin repair and renewal. We think of it like fertilizer for the skin, to drive the growth of healthy new tissue. Growth factors are contained in some elite skin products and improve wrinkles and skin firmness, and we recommend them for most patients. Q A Just like the book title says, I feel bad about my neck. Why does it look so old, and what can I do about it? What happens on our neck is the result of the unfortunate combination of thin, delicate skin and daily sun exposure. We see discoloration, crepiness, and sagging. Sometimes a necklift surgery is the best choice, but there are many options that don’t involve surgery. Many of our patients choose treatment with a laser, IPL, or energy device to improve the neck skin. We also may recommend Botox or Dysport for some patients, and always a topical program at home to maximize results. $60 Nectifirm $70 SkinCeuticals Neck Chest & Hand Repair Q $260 $165 TNS Essential TNS Recovery Serum Complex $95 TNS Eye Repair $85 TNS Illuminating Eye Cream A I had Juvederm injected into my smile creases a few years ago and liked my results. I recently wanted to have it done again, but my dermatologist told me that I should have 5 syringes of Juvederm into various areas of my face. I was shocked, because I only needed 1 syringe last time. Does this seem excessive? At first it might appear that way, but it is probably a very appropriate recommendation. The way that we use fillers to rejuvenate the face has evolved in recent years, so that instead of simply filling wrinkles, we now use it to restore the volume that the face loses in the aging process. It is the lost volume that makes us look tired and old. Using filler in this way gives a natural, refreshed, and lifted appearance.
