The Blueprint Page 2 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE August, 2012 Message from the President — President’s Message I’m sure you’re all aware of the adage “ There’s power in numbers .” That is more true today than ever. Our association has leveraged its membership power to defeat some huge threats to our industry, our businesses and our future. If you don’t get updates from NAHB or MAHB, then you’re missing out on the news of the successes we’ve had with respect to MIOSHA and the fall protection rule, with the EPA on its Lead Paint Rule, the Federal Reserve, Treasury Department and HUD on Housing Finance Reform. The fact that a portion of our dues goes to state and national advocacy efforts is benefit number one. There’s no way any of us individually could cry foul loud enough, call legis-lators and regulators often enough or bring attention to complaints about business -killing mandates. Our memberships afford us a seat at the table of policy -makers and now more than ever we are taking a stand and actually beginning to have input on the very regula-tions and codes that we must practice by. Never before have we been respected so much as an industry—so much so that President Obama and his staff have conceded that housing policy was, mistakably, not a priority of their economic recovery plan. Today, they understand that housing and homeownership are major components of our economic and jobs recovery. NAHB staff have been invited to help draft legislation, regulation and policy which will only further our cause and help turn around our industry. Currently, in Washington and Lansing, our legislatures are con-sidering pro -housing and pro -business bills which we helped craft to benefit our members, our businesses and our economies. I ask you to remember this when it comes time to renew your membership, and when you’re talking with others in business related to housing that “Membership Pays.” As we are able to gain influence to guide our own future, we need to grow our base and take ac-tion to preserve our livelihoods. As always, I’m available to take comment or questions about emerging issues so feel free to contact me.
