I’ve thought many times about a triplex apartment house in Monterey Park that I wanted to buy. It was on By Dave Barron, sale for $90,000. The rent alone would have paid the Journal Editor mortgage. I didn’t buy it for fear of a souring economy. Today, it is probably worth $600,000 or more. It would have made my retirement years very comfy. One of the experiences I missed was never being a Boy Scout. My grandchildren have been involved in scouting for several years now and they are getting great experiences. That brings me to the subject of this week’s column – that of the honored title of Eagle Scout. To get the title of Eagle Scout requires a lot of work and planning by a Scout. Most of the Eagle Scouts are already in high school and on their way to manhood. The latest recipient was Michael Jei-lin Wu from Troop 301. Scout Wu was awarded his Eagle Scout badge recently at ceremonies held at the Shepherd of the Hills United Methodist Church. It is an honor he will carry with him throughout his life. Many great men, even U.S. Presidents, never fail to list the Eagle Scout title on their resumes. Several other local Scouts are also receiving their Eagle Scout badges after completing their special projects. This includes Connor J. Bahng, Lucas Patrick Talbot and Brian Tanner Woo, all from Scout Troop 361. Also earning an Eagle Scout Badge was Clement M. Ng from Troop 349 and Jonathan Chan from Scout 301. In addition to earning many merit badges, the scouts also completed a special project to finally earn the Eagle Scout award. Michael Wu is a good example of the effort it takes to become an Eagle Scout. His Eagle Court of Honor program reads like a resume listing all his scouting assignments, and merit badges he earned. For his Eagle Project, Michael led the renovation of two forty-feet shipping containers in Mark Keppel High School’s Track. This included placing a vapor barrier on the bottom of the containers, installing new flooring, organizing and rearranging the equipment as well as refinishing and painting the exterior. He planned the project and let forty volunteers who collectively spent 350 hours on the project. He also raised about $1,000 from local school and community organizations to pay for the supplies. Scouting has not been Michael’s only passion He was also active in the Mark Keppel track and field team, the cross-country team, and a number of academic honor societies. I am most impressed with his being vice president of the Calculus Club. Michael has graduated from Mark Keppel High School and will be attending UCLA this fall majoring in Electrical Engineering. By the way, his older brother, Jonathan, also earned an Eagle Scout badge. His proud parents are Linda Lum and Bob Wu.
