No. I was born and raised on Long Island, NY, first Brooklyn, then New Hyde Park, then Centerport. Now, I’m one of those damn Yankees that will never go back. how long have you lived in the area and what do you miss most about your hometown? We moved to Fredericksburg in December 2004. I really don’t miss Long Island. It is very congested and the LI Expressway is worse than I-95, if you can believe that! What brought you to the Fredericksburg region? We were living in the Dayton, OH area. Having lived in Giles County, VA for more than nine years, we always wanted to move back to Virginia. So when the op-portunity came to move to Fred-ericksburg to manage a printing operation for an owner in New Jersey, we jumped on it. But I soon realized that it was not going to work out. After eight moves dur-ing our marriage, Roberta said we were not moving again. I wanted Karl Karch to start my own business and discovered Home Instead Senior Care. We love our profession and the Fredericksburg area and intend to remain here for the duration. What is your educational background? I received a BS in Management Engineering from Rensselaer Poly-technic Institute in Troy, NY and my MBA in Finance from Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ. What was your very first job? My first job as a teenager was as a golf caddy carrying two heavy bags during the hot summer months. I decided very quickly that I wanted to be playing golf rather than carrying bags. When did you become owner of a home instead Senior Care? Roberta and I started our Home Instead Senior Care franchise in November 2005 and opened another office in Culpeper in February 2009. We both enjoy being around older adults, maybe because we are older ourselves, as well as giving back to the community. It’s a career you have to have a heart and passion to undertake. We meet some amazing people in our profession. Learning about the lives our clients lived can be fascinating. For example, one female client was one of the first women flyers in WWII and taught men how to fly. What is your biggest accomplishment? Over the years, I held many managerial positions with big titles, but the biggest accomplishment was starting my own business and growing it into a successful and trusted source of home care and employment in the community. Why has serving as an Ambassador been a positive experience? I’ve said many times that I believe the Chamber was very important to the growth in my business. But, I am quick to add that “you have to give to get.” We have a very active Chamber with a great staff that is motivated to help members succeed. But members must get involved in order to receive the benefits. I’ve met many people through networking that I would not have met otherwise.
