Routes Tourism Mediterranean Signaling the acknowledgement of tourism destination development’s role as equal partners with airports and airlines in route development, Routes announced the first Routes Tourism Mediterranean event scheduled to take place in Antalya, Turkey, February 13-15, 2011. This new annual, intra-regional tourism destination development forum will focus on the Mediterranean and bring Routes proven mix of formal and informal meetings, unmatched networking opportunities, plus Routes uniquely successful, pre-scheduled one-to-one meetings, to a destination event. Eric Layden, Routes VP commented: “Routes Tourism Mediterranean is a proactive event, open only to invited delegates and using networking methodology perfected by Routes over the past 16 years. The principal objective is to increase tourist traffic within the whole region. Routes Tourism Mediterranean will focus on a series of pre-arranged meetings between tour operators, airlines and their destination suppliers to discuss new products, commercial terms and promotional strategies and to reach specific agreements on the tour operators summer 2012 programs.” Inaugural Routes CIS a resounding success Aviation industry leaders came together in Kharkiv, Ukraine, from June 7-9 to increase their understanding of the CIS market and to identify key route development opportunities. Over 400 meetings took place and numerous new services are in development. Mattias Wickholm, Network Planning & Strategy, Resource Management, Finnair commented: “My aim is to gain more market knowledge and get a better understanding of trends, developments and opportunities in the CIS region. We would like to have a presence in this market, but Western airlines are facing lots of problems when trying to enter the CIS as they can only have a certain number of flights. The development potential, however, is amazing. Our issue at the moment is the lack of data, so I am aiming to get more information about the local airports to see how and where we can enter the market and benefit from the vast opportunities.” Routes CIS Strategy Forum explored the shape and direction of the region’s aviation industry The panelists explored the future of air transport in the region and a comparison was drawn between the CIS and the European market, pointing out that the air transport industry in the CIS is at the same level now as Europe’s industry was 20 years ago. Air transport services were dominated by bilateral agreements that caused limited capacity and impacted pricing, frequency and access to the market. All panelists agreed that there is massive potential in the region, but that a significant amount of work has to be done to reach an Open Skies Agreement.
