Communiqué WELCOME TO THE PREMIERE ISSUE of Sports Destination Management. We are very excited to bring you solutions and best practices in our editorial content that we are confident will help you more effectively manage your events. While talking to numerous experts and consultants in the industry, as well as absorbing our very thorough editorial pages, one thing has become abundantly clear: to have a successful event, you must have clear channels of communication. At every level, and with every challenge, communication is the key. Whether it is working with a sports commission to determine the right facility, creating a solid public relations campaign, or working with sponsors and vendors, a clear understanding of each party’s objectives is paramount. Our goals in establishing this publication are threefold. We have created a magazine that should be used as a guidepost for event organizers to more effectively manage their events. We have established a dialog between event owners and the respective sports commission/ CVB. And we believe we have raised the bar in terms of actionable content from a magazine. Many thanks go out to the numerous advisors and consultants with whom we’ve worked. While I cannot thank everyone, one key individual merits recognition. Don Schumacher, executive director of the National Association of Sports Commissions, has been an immense help in learning about the industry from the sports commission perspective. I also extend a nod of gratitude to our contributors in this issue. As you will see in the following pages, these individuals have a wealth of knowledge and expertise in sports event management and journalism. The “Three Shawns” (Ryan, McBride, and Hatem – along with Dev Pathik) bring a unique view to sports event management. Denise Stokes delivers an invaluable piece, written from the perspective of a regional sports commission. Paul Bassman lends his expertise in event insurance to make certain all bases are covered. And finally, Juli Anne Freidberg and Andrea Johnson offer excellent overviews of Soccer, Lacrosse, Gymnastics, and the Southeast’s sports climate. In closing, let me say that while we publish this magazine, this is your magazine too. Whatever the advice, whatever the topic, we want to hear from you. As I mentioned in the opening, communication is the key. And we strive to serve as a conduit for effective sports event management.
