and weekend classes to accommodate working students. Birmingham is full of those opportunities. There are degreed as well as non-degreed programs, online courses and traditional classroom programs to suit even the busiest of schedules. Here are some of the opportunities available to Birmingham moms/jugglers who want to throw a backpack over their shoulders and get down to the business of education. For the Stay-At-Home Juggler with School- Aged Children: If your kids are in school during the day and you are available during those hours, there are many educational opportunities in the Birmingham area. Traditional daytime classes are offered at Jefferson State Community College in Birmingham. Moms can choose their course load and take as many classes as they can handle each semester. They can pursue a degree or a certificate program. The latter allows moms to brush up on specific marketable skills such as customer service training without actually obtaining a degree. Moms looking to start or finish their bachelor’s or master’s degree should check out the University of Alabama at Birmingham. UAB also offers traditional daytime classes. Dee Dee Bruns, UAB associate vice president for enrollment management, explains the many programs offered at UAB for moms. “UAB has a myriad of courses for the adult student whose desire is career enhancement, degree path or personal enjoyment,” she says. “Potential adult students seeking personal enrichment or a single course may apply as a temporary student (non-degree) and take one course per semester for up to three semesters. Adults who wish to finish a degree or complete a second degree may apply as degree-seeking students and take the full range of courses that fit a busy schedule: morning, afternoon, or evening, and many courses are available online as well.” For the Working Juggler Who Needs Maximum Flexibility: All moms are working moms. But for moms who work outside of the home, time is a particularly valuable commodity. For these moms a return to school can mean heightened anxiety, less sleep and less time with their families. They need maximum flexibility in their schedules >> birminghamparent.com | 17
