Getting Ready for a New Season THE GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY water wings have disappeared from the store shelves and been replaced by the Guardians of the Galaxy backpacks and notebooks. Kids everywhere have headed back to the classroom and fall sports are gaining traction. As adults, too, fall into autumn, I have a question for you: You just spent the last few months putting on some excellent sports events. Isn’t it time you let others in the industry know about your success? After all, tournaments do more than bring in athletes and parents; they fill our hotels and restaurants, they bring foot traffic to our downtowns and they bring in new visitors to explore our museums, water parks, malls and mini-golf parks. In short, they build economies and they change the faces of cities, making them stronger and more prosperous. Why not celebrate that you have been a part of all this? Here’s how: Nominate an event for SDM’s annual awards program, Champions of Economic Impact in Sports Tourism. It’s a great way to spread the news about your work and the great things it accomplished for the host city. Go to our website to find out how. The online entry process is easy and the rewards are great. In the meantime, we have a great issue for you. Softball, open water sports and gymnastics are featured, and we have some excellent articles from industry insiders sharing their knowledge about grand transportation, security and negotiating with your venue. There’s also a great article on destinations in the Southwest and Pacific regions of the U.S. Want to know what makes an event desirable as a long-term client? You’ll find out in this issue too. We also catch up with the national governing bodies of cycling as well as track & field. This issue also contains some great insights on outstanding venues throughout the U. S. If you have an event that is seeking a new home, you may just find it in these pages. And there’s never been a better time to look; after all, the Olympics in PyeongChang are on the horizon, and so are things like football (at any level) and, down the road a bit, even March Madness. The calendar page is turning and a new season is here. Let’s all make the most of it.
