JOHNSONIAN THE Summer Edition 2010 Johnson College Announces Center for Sustainability Families Gather to Establish Scholarship Recently, John and Patricia Atkins, of Waverly, graciously made a gift to Johnson College to establish an endowed scholarship on behalf of their dear friend and local carpen-ter, F. David Mercanti. The Atkins, along with the Mercanti family, met with Dr. Pipinski to share stories about David and receive an up close look at the Carpentry and Cabinet-making Technology Program Area. The F. David Mercanti Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a student each year from the Carpentry and Cabinetmaking Technology Program. Johnson College recently established the Center for Sustainability. The Center is dedicated to a regional understanding and application of green and sustainable concepts. The focus of the Center is pro-gramming that provides industry-driven curriculum and events. Education and training provides opportunities leading to industry-recognized credentials and the development of career pathways. The Center for Sustainability at John-son College is an umbrella term for a number of activities as opposed to being a physical office building. These activi-ties include industry training, continuing education, collaborative programming, degree programs, and community events. Anumber of initiatives for the Center are currently un-derway. Most notably, due to a grant from the Pennsyl-vania Department of Labor and Industry made possible by the American Recov-ery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), Johnson College is one of only seven weather-ization training providers in Pennsylvania. This train-ing is the first of its kind in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
