Season of Sports HERE WE ARE, DEEP IN THE SUMMER OF SPORTS, but coming up on the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. We’re also waiting for the announcement regarding the host city of the 2024 Games and watching the drama surrounding the development of the new summer sports for Tokyo in 2020. Baseball is at fever pitch and football is already in the works. In other words, it’s a great time to be a sports nerd. If, like me, your sports interests include not merely the sport itself but the business of it, this is the issue for you. Leading off, we have an article on legal and logistical issues in planning international sports events – and since international travel is such a hot-button topic, this is one piece you won’t want to miss. We also cover negotiating hotel contracts in light of the stay-to-play policy, best practices in volunteer recruitment and engagement – and working with sports commissions and CVBs. These are all articles written by your peers and by those in the industry, and we are very grateful for their insights. Two excellent pieces written by those in the governance of the sports of volleyball and in competitive cheer and dance round out our offerings from those in the know. When it comes to selection of destinations, we have you covered. There are features on three incredibly disparate sports: lacrosse, running & road racing, and combat sports, such as boxing, wrestling, martial arts and even MMA. The venues showcased are scattered throughout the nation, and many have as an added inducement the strong community support from local clubs and organizations to help you put on your best event yet. If you’ve been considering a destination in the Southeast, our Regional Focus article should be of interest to you; many of these cities are primed and ready to host, with a full complement of venues for all four seasons. As we move through the summer and toward the fall, you might be thinking about a way to become more involved with your profession. Maybe you’re thinking of joining a professional association that is germane to your sport or your profession. Maybe you want to contribute time but on your own terms. SDM is looking for some of our industry members to author articles on various topics, and we’d love to have your involvement. With all we cover, we’re sure to find something that fits with your interests – and your schedule. Please reach out to me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you’re interested in this opportunity. Until our next issue, enjoy the summer – it never lasts long enough!
