It is the most common of the nine forms of muscular dystrophy. It is diagnosed in one in 5,000 boys at birth. The disease primarily affects boys, but in rare cases can strike girls. Symptoms begin in early childhood, typically ages three to five. It begins by attacking muscles. By the child’s early teens, it attacks the heart and respiratory muscles. Douglas was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy at the age of four years. He lived his life in a wheelchair from the age of nine. With the help of great caregivers and a wonderfully conscientious family, Douglas lived a longer life than the original seventeen years doctors predicted at the time of his diagnosis. Throughout his life, he craved knowledge and was an exemplary student, eventually earning a Master of Divinity degree from Southwestern Adventist University in 2013.
