Tyler Today April/May 2017 : Page 8

from the A mild winter is responsible for the spring flowers and azaleas blooming early. That means summer is just around the corner. Our 18th Annual Summer Planner is sure to provide inspiration for the whole family. We’ve invited the East Texas Moms Blog to once again share their wisdom. The Summer Planner is full of area businesses and attractions to help you get the most out of the months ahead! Before spring turns into summer, The University of Texas at Tyler’s Patriot Golf Classic will be attracting golf enthusiasts to take a swing for scholarships. For thirty-one years, the UT Patriot Golf Classic and the Million Dollar Hole-in-One have raised over $2 million in scholarship funds for UT Tyler students. We are pleased to share our 3rd Annual Legal Section and Guide. Our cover story about the Canal family was inspired by Jemilynn McKee of Haute Totz, who suggested the need to provide awareness of children in the foster care system. That led to a story about the Smith County Young Lawyers Association and how their volunteers create the celebratory atmosphere at Adoption Days in Tyler. This year’s Law Day is April 26th and TYLER TODAY had the opportunity to sit down with this year’s Justinian Award recipient and learn about the most interesting man from Martins Mill, Judge Bill Bass. We congratulate Cristy Arscott for twenty years as Executive Director of the Smith County Bar Association and Foundation. Speaking of the law, our Home Style features “Lawless Acres,” a ranch located outside of Jefferson, Texas. It is the weekend home of Melissa and Stephen Thomas. The unique home includes a silo, a guest house and so much more. I can’t wait to be invited to spend the weekend! John and I were honored to be guests of Louise and Guy Griffeth at the Texas Independence Day Dinner in Austin when Earl Campbell was presented with the History-Making Texan Award, an honor shared with baseball great Nolan Ryan. Tyler’s own Margaret Perkins chaired the event. Many Tylerites were on hand for this tribute. The Apache Belles greeted attendees as they arrived, pinning everyone with Texas flags! May God continue to bless Texas! Congratulations to Michael P. Smith, founder of The Rénard Group, the advertising agency that celebrates its fortieth anniversary this year. Not only has Smith made an impact on the advertising industry in East Texas, he has also been my mentor. Wishing you a blessed Easter! Happy Mother’s Day to all moms (especially mine)! And finally, congratulations to the Class of 2017!
