IT PAYS TO SEEK OUT SCHOLARSHIPS 7 Tips You Need to Know to Apply For Amber, it was the determination to be a firstgeneration college student. For Anthony, it was fulfilling his childhood dream of becoming a nurse. And for Maria, it was taking a hopeless lifestyle and transforming it into a permanent home and a job she loves. For these students and thousands of others, scholarships provided the financial assistance they needed to realize their academic dreams. Scholarships, unlike student loans, do not have to be paid back, which helps lower or even eliminate student debt. Scholarships come in all shapes and sizes and are awarded to students by generous companies, organizations, and individuals for a variety of reasons—financial need, academic achievement, special interests, or other criteria. The VC Foundation aims to help students achieve their goals in life, and helping them financially is an impactful way to do that. In 2016, the VC Foundation awarded over 780 scholarships totaling more than $550,000. Students enrolling in traditional credit courses can apply for more than 100 scholarships by completing one application. Scholarship opportunities are also available for high school students taking dual credit classes as well as workforce students seeking a faster track to their careers in areas such as welding, nurse aide, and truck driving. Regardless of which college you plan to attend, these tips will help you navigate the scholarship application process. Tip 1: Start early. The sooner you get started, the better chance you have of being awarded a scholarship. Tip 2: Get organized. Before submitting an application, you’ll need the following items: • High school transcript • Parents’ financial information and tax returns • GPA • SAT and/or ACT scores • Your activities list Tip 3: Keep an activity list. Your list should include: • Volunteer work • Community service • Extracurricular activities • Awards or achievements • Interests and hobbies • Leadership experience • Employment Tip 4: Pay attention to particulars. Know the application deadlines, eligibility requirements, and supporting materials requested. Never submit an incomplete application. Tip 5: Proofread. Prior to submitting your application, have someone else double check your work. Tip 6: Keep digital copies. You may be able to copy and paste some responses onto future applications. Tip 7: Watch for the award notice. Check for an email or letter announcing a scholarship award and pay close attention to the requirements and deadlines.
