Ian Wilson’s September 22 message to the SAA Service Center warmed my heart: “Dear Colleagues, I have just renewed my SAA membership. In doing so, I am reminded that I am coming up on my 50th anniversary as an SAA member! I recall attending the SAA annual meeting in Ottawa in 1967, the centennial of Canada’s confederation. I believe that I joined SAA that year. In those days we had to be recommended by an existing member who would assure SAA that we were in fact passing as an archivist. I am in my anecdotage but still very active professionally. I wonder if your records as to my membership agree with my fading memory?” Ian’s message prompted me to ask the question—again, but probably in a new way—about whether our association management software (AMS) system can produce a report on SAA members’ anniversary dates. (1) Turns out that it can—sort of. Although our current AMS actually can report out join date through current date, one of the systems used in the ‘80s overwrote start dates with rejoin dates for those whose membership lapsed for three months. (Sigh.) Herewith, those stalwarts who have been members of SAA for 40 years or more. Distinguished Fellows appear in italics; past presidents are indicated by the years in which they served. 66 Years: Meyer Fishbein (Honorary Member). 62 Years: Maynard Brichford (1979-80). 54 Years: F. Gerald Ham (1973-74). 53 Years: Wayne Murdoch. 52 Years: J. Frank Cook (1982-1983). 51 Years: Anne Diffendal. 50 Years: Howard Applegate, Mary Bryan, David Maslyn, and Ian Wilson. 49 Years: Roger Dahl and Richard Strassberg. 48 Years: Shonnie Finnegan (1985-86). 47 Years: Lydia Lucas, Philip Mooney, Mary Jo Pugh, Gary Saretzky, Carolyn Sung, and Edward Weldon (1981-82). 46 Years: Terry Abraham, Charles Palm, Mary Pankin, and Thomas Wilsted. 45 Years: Alan Bain, Paul Chestnut, Patricia Kennedy Grimsted, Steven Hensen (2001-02), David Horn, Phillip Runkel, and Nancy Sahli. 44 Years: Ronald Becker, Nicholas Burckel (1996-97), James Byers, Linda Edgerly, Frank “Kim” Efird, and Connell Gallagher. 43 Years: Anthony Crawford, Maygene Daniels (1994-95), John Fleckner (1989-90), Sue Holbert (1987-88), Frederick Honhart, David Johnson, William Joyce (1986- 87) , William Marshall, William Morison, Trudy Peterson (1990-91), and Laetitia Yeandle. 42 Years: Mary “Mimi” Bowling, Larry Burgess, Richard Cox, Bruce Dearstyne, Paul Scott, Robert Sink, and Victoria Irons Walch. 41 Years: Lewis Bellardo, Francis Blouin, John Jacob, Dennis Morrow, and Robert Shuster. 40 Years: Jeanne Abrams, Roland Baumann, Laurel Bowen, Richard Cameron, Barbara Craig, Susan Davis, Linda Evans, James Fogerty, Thomas Frusciano, Ellen Garrison, Mary Ellen Gleason, Randall Jimerson (2004-05), Jean Kiesel, Eva Moseley, Tawny Ryan Nelb, Mary Elizabeth Ruwell, Deborah Skaggs, Bill Sumners, Sheryl Vogt, and Diane Vogt-O’Connor. But here’s a little wrinkle in the report: It indicates that we have 10 “Lifetime Members,” all with a start date of January 1, 1987. Suspicious date, especially because the group includes the likes of H.G. Jones, David Gracy, and Frank Evans. So I called Dr. Gracy, who remembers that his wife or mother gave him a “lifetime membership” sometime in the ‘80s. We’ve found no mention of this apparent marketing tactic in official Council materials or unofficial membership marketing materials, nor do we know the amount charged for this “special deal.” (If you have evidence, please share! We’d love to enter good information into our new and improved AMS when the time comes.) So here are our ten “lifetime” members, most of whom I’m sure made their initial investment in SAA at least 40 years ago: Arnold Brown, Marion Chandler, Dana Craig, Frank Evans (1988-89), David Gracy (1983-84), Charles Hipolite, H.G. Jones (1968-69), William King, Carmelita Ryan, and Garry Ryan. Long-time executive director Ann Morgan Campbell (1974-86) appears on the list as an “Honorary Member” with that same suspicious start date of January 1, 1987. I don’t know Ann’s original join date either. But I do wish her—and all our long-time members—a long-overdue Happy Anniversary! (1) I just received a congratulatory note from the American Society of Association Executives on the occasion of my 36th anniversary as a member. Makes me feel old. And very wise.
