Brenda Banks, 66, passed away on July 25 in Atlanta, Georgia. A graduate of Spelman College, where she received a BA in history, and Atlanta University, where she earned a master’s in library and information science with a concentration in archival management, Banks’s contributions to the profession were significant and far ranging. She spent much of her career with the Georgia Department of Archives and History, beginning in 1972 as an assistant archivist and ultimately becoming deputy director of the Georgia Archives. After retiring from the Georgia Archives, she established Banks Archives Consultants. Banks served as SAA’s 51st President (1995-1996), chaired the SAA Diversity Task Force, was named a SAA Fellow and received the Council Exemplary Service award. From 1999 to 2005, she administered and coordinated a nationwide archives education and training program for Historically Black Colleges and Universities and had a major role in guiding the Georgia Archives Institute. Banks also served as president of the Society of Georgia Archivists and on the boards of the National Association of Government Archives and Records Administrators and the International Council on Archives. Dr. Ian Bruce Turner, 70, passed away on August 9. Born in Monmouth, Illinois, Dr. Turner received his BA in history with a minor in music from Otterbein College in Ohio, MA and PhD in American history from the University of Illinois, and MLS at the University of Kentucky. He worked as the head of special collections and assistant librarian at the State University of New York at Oswego from 1977 to 1983, then as associate professor and professor of library sciences and head of archives and special collections at Edith Garland Dupré Library at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (ULL). During his 33 years at ULL, he published 26 articles in six journals, curated 30 exhibits, and was an active member of the Louisiana Archives and Manuscripts Association, the Society of Southwest Archivists, and the Louisiana Historical Association. He also chaired several committees for the Society of American Archivists.
