LEE COUNTY LEE COUNTY STRIKERS SOCCER CLUB U12 BOYS LOSE ON PENALTIES ON FINAL THRILLER Over the weekend the Strikers U12 Boys competed in the Southwest Florida League End of Season (Winter) tournament. The group that they were placed in consisted of a mixture of eight U11 and U12 teams from Cape Coral, Naples, Immokalee and Bonita Springs. The first game against a Cape Coral U12 All‐ Star team began with a confidence building 8‐0 win for the Strikers. The second game, against a very tough Naples U11 team ended in a 4‐1 win for the Strikers which meant they were pretty much guaranteed a spot in the final the following day. Before that though the Strikers had to play against Cape Coral’s U12 competitive team on Sunday morning. For that game the Strikers began where they left off with another 4‐1 win which sealed top spot and a final game against another strong Naples U11 Boys team. The final started off very well with the Strikers taking a 1‐0 lead in the first quarter and comfortably holding that score until half time. During the the third quarter Naples threatened a lot more as they threw everything at the Strikers in search of an equalizer. Naples were rewarded with their equalizing goal mid‐way through the third quarter, and from that point until the end of the game both teams had more chances to score but neither could breach the goal. When the referee blew the final whistle the score was tied at 1‐1 and the game went into a penalty shootout. Each team were given 5 penalties each and after a nervous start by both teams they were still tied at 2 goals a piece after the first 5 penalties. It then went to sudden death and Naples ran out as the tournament winners with a 3‐2 win on penalties. Congratulations to all the players for a spirited display over the two days and we hope they can build on this weekend’s display next weekend at the Weston Tournament and the following week up in Tampa for the Region C first round games.
