Prior to her opening remarks, the Clay County Community Band entertained the audience for thirty minutes with several popular tunes. With no rain in the forecast and only white puffy clouds in the sky, Mayor Lewis introduced about a dozen honored guests and dignitaries including GCS Vice Mayor Mitch Timberlake, outgoing Mayor Van Royal, and Council Member Steven Kelly. "It is my privilege and honor to gather here with military members and veterans to pay tribute to those that have given their lives in service to our country for our precious freedoms." said Mayor Lewis. "We must never forget the pain and sacrifice of those brave men and women. Our commemoration each year of this solemn day serves as a lesson to young and old alike that freedom is never free." She added, "We must continue to educate our youth about the significance of this day and persist in our efforts so future generations understand the gravity of the sacrifice of these brave heroes and what they endured for our liberty." Clay County Commissioner Diane Hutchings shared a proclamation honoring those who have fallen and to the city of Green Cove Springs for what it does to make a difference in Clay County. "Whereas throughout the history of the United States of America, men and women have given a part of their lives to serve in the United States Armed Forces, and whereas many of those men and women have paid the ultimate sacrifice of service to their country, and whereas freedom, the preservation of our republic does not come cheap." Ms. Hutchings went on to say, "Young men and women in military service continue to protect our freedom and our nation's waters and our families."
