Planning Time Around here, the New Year brings forth a certain optimism where we all set out our objectives and slowly begin the process of perusing them. While these goals may vary in substance and importance, be they professional or personal, they all share one common trait – a timeline. Included in this annual rite of passage is the planning that goes into accomplishing those goals, specific with action plans. One action item that we are certain to undertake is attendance at the National Association of Sports Commissions (NASC) Sports Event Symposium in Columbus, Ohio April 13 – 15, 2010. This annual event is hosted by the sports events industry’s leading networking organization, the National Association of Sports Commissions. The membership of NASC is comprised of organizations that attract sporting events to their community (i. e. sports commissions and convention and visitors bureaus), event owners, and vendors and suppliers to the sports event industry. The NASC is the primary network for communication and information sharing on all topics relating to the sports event industry. The annual symposium is by far the most interactive, information rich event in the industry, appealing to all aspects of the industry, including event organizers. The educational tracks offer insight into what works in making an event successful ranging in topics from best practices to securing sponsorships to safety and security. Networking opportunities abound with numerous events specifically created to bring all aspects of the sports event world together. As I mentioned in a previous letter, this event ranks high on my list of over 60 trade shows and conferences I’ve attended. The level of professionalism and dedication by the staff and its members is quite remarkable. So, as you begin your journey into 2010, be certain to make plans for Columbus, Ohio in April. The Sports Event Symposium is certain to give you a bevy of contacts and a wealth of knowledge to assist you with your next event.
