National Mall NATIONAL MALL – One of the most famous NPS-run parks in the country, the National Mall wears glorious harvest hues during the fall. ROCK CREEK PARK – This easy-to-access 1,800-acre park in Northwest DC is home to the National Zoo, a golf course, horse stables and miles of trails. Enjoy views of Italianate architecture and visit the memorial to President Lincoln’s predecessor, James Buchanan. DID YOU KNOW? The inaugural Landmark Music Festival for the National Mall (Sept. 26-27) in West Potomac Park kicks off the fall concert season with an A-list lineup including Drake, The Strokes, alt-J and 40+ other acts. Along the U Street Corridor, 9:30 Club is a staple on concert venue “best of” lists. It hosts legendary performers (read: Bob Dylan) as well as emerging artists. Black Cat on 14th Street is known for local and indie acts but also hosts big names like the Foo Fighters. Get your fix of jazz and R&B at The Hamilton Live, a restaurant and basement-level music venue, or at Blues Alley, a 1920s-style supper club in Georgetown. Nearby, intimate Gypsy Sally’s hosts bluegrass, folk and country acts. PRO SPORTS Sports ignite an already lively season in DC. Visit Verizon Center and catch one of the NHL’s hottest tickets; Washington Capitals games are always packed. The NBA’s Washington Wizards, led by All-Star point guard John Wall, also play at Verizon Center in Chinatown, where restaurants and bars draw fans before and after games. Tailgate at FedExField before watching the NFL’s Washington Redskins – especially if you’re in town for the Dec. 7 game against the NFC East rival Dallas Cowboys.
