BEHIND THE SCENES The Errant Knight Don Quixote Amphibian Stage Productions artistic director Kathleen Culebro so loves Don Quixote that she commissioned noted playwright/actor Brenda Withers to write a screenplay. "I talked to her at the end of January, and she said she had to read the book." Thus was born The Quixotic Days and Errant Nights of the Knight Errant Don Quixote, which makes its world premiere July 9 in Fort Worth. Culebro persuaded her sister, visual artist Laura Barbata, to make the costumes, which are fanciful and fun (see if you can spot all the household/kitchen gadgets). Withers, who has performed with the 'Phibs, developed her screenplay around Alonso Quixano. Alonso is obsessed with medieval romance novels and rechristens himself Don Quixote de la Mancha. Sancho the sidekick is along for the ride when Don Quixote sets off to battle evil. Culebro says the play, which at one point was going to be a children's show, celebrates books in a world that would be drab without them. July 9-Aug. 2 with Thu.-Sat. evening performances and Sunday matinees. For ticket information, go to amphibianstage.com.
