MIAMI DADE COLLEGE COLLEGE A Day of Inspiration and Celebration Top Leaders to Address Graduates at Commencement Ceremonies A wave of excitement is flowing through Miami Dade College as its big-gest celebration of the year draws near. More than 15,000 graduates are checking the fit of their caps and gowns for the big day on May 2, when commencement ceremonies for the College’s campuses will take place throughout Miami-Dade County. High-level speakers will address graduates and their families on the festive occasion marking exciting, new beginnings for those who persevered to complete their studies at MDC. Each spring, the world’s most important figures offer words of wisdom to MDC graduates at commencement, including U.S. presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, who addressed graduates in pre-vious years. In recent years, graduates have received parting advice from world-class leaders in government, business and education, including Hondu-ran President Porfirio Lobo, Georgetown University President Dr. John J. DeGioia, Univisión Network President César Conde, Brown University Pres-ident Dr. Ruth Simmons, Lumina Foundation President Jamie Merisotis, U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis and former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Among those participating at this year’s commencement ceremonies will be: • Dr. William “Bro” Adams , chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities • Katherine Archuleta , director of the White House Office of Personnel Management • Frank Del Río , chairman and CEO of Norwegian Cruise Lines • Mike Fernández , chairman and CEO of MBF Healthcare Partners • Dr. William E. Trueheart , president and CEO of Achieving the Dream Inc. f orum April 2015 • Volume 19 • Number 2 New Basque Cuisine Master Receives Presidential Medal Chef Juan Mari Arzak Honored at MDC Earlier this spring, Miami Dade College welcomed world-renowned Spanish Chef Juan Mari Arzak , whose restaurant in San Sebastián has held three Michelin stars since 1989. Miami Dade College President Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón presented Chef Arzak with a Presidential Medal in recognition of his lifetime achievement as an innovator in the culinary arts across the globe. Chef Arzak is considered the greatest master of New Basque Cuisine. His restaurant, which he runs with his daughter, Elena, has been in the top 10 of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants since 2006. In 2008, he was appoint-ed as “Universal Basque” by the Basque Autonomous Government. Not long after this recognition, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from World’s 50 Best Restaurants in 2011. Chef Arzak was honored with the Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture. He also received the Gold Medal of the City of Donostia and the Gold Medal of the territory of Guipúzcoa. Other out-standing recognitions include the Gran Premio del Arte de la Cocina for Best Chef in Europe and the International Award of Honor by Trophée Gourmet. MDC’s Presidential Medal has been award-ed to leaders and luminaries from across the world for their impactful contributions to hu-manity. Past recipients include U.S. Presi-dent Bill Clinton, former Polish President Lech Walesa, former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Cuban dissident blog-ger Yoani Sánchez, award-winning author Maya Angelou, Czech dissident Václav Havel, and former Soviet Union General Sec-Mayor Tomás Regalado, left, presented retary and Nobel Peace Prize-winner Mikhail the key to the City of Miami to Chef Juan Gorbachev, to name a few.
