Fifteen teams from schools in Northeast Florida and Georgia competed, and it was the first time in six years that Clay’s rifle team brought home a first place trophy. In addition, the team qualified for the NJROTC Area TWELVE Championship Match that will be held in Anniston, Alabama in late January. The cadets use air rifles that fire .177 caliber lead pellets. From a distance of 10 meters (just over 33 feet) cadets fire ten record shots from three different positions – prone, standing, and kneeling. In each position a perfect score of ten bull’s-eyes is 100 points. It is a sport that requires a tremendous amount of commitment, focus, and self-discipline. Clay’s Team 1 placed first with a score of 993 out of a possible 1200 points. Team 2 finished in eighth place with a score of 769. The match was held at the Gateway Rifle and Pistol Range on Jacksonville’s Westside.
