Recently several of our staff attended The annual Sports Event Symposium, hosted by the National Association of Sports Commissions in Denver. Learning that the sports travel industry will be less impacted by the downturn in the economy than other sectors was one highlight of the show (and there were many). Don Schumacher, executive director, provided numbers in his opening address that sports travel is more insulated than other segments of the travel industry, and much more than other industries. His explanation, while somewhat simple, makes perfect sense: People will get Janie to her soccer match. They may have to sacrifice certain things to get there, but sports event participation is a growing past-time that is an important facet of life in America. With this outlook we present the July/August issue of Sports Destination Management. In it, we focus on several events including lacrosse, indoor sports, association games and yes, soccer. These articles showcase where events are being held, why they are being held in a particular location / venue, how they are managed and the successes of these sports. And our Site Selection article showcasing soccer presents a great primer for location selection, and what to look for when choosing a site. We also have excellent advisory articles focusing on many aspects of running your event, from managing sports tours, to event merchandising, to ensuring your event is ADA compliant. All of these articles, plus the Perspectives piece (focusing on what facilities want from an event like yours) offer deep insight into how to make your event more successful for all involved. Finally, let me offer a special thanks to Don Schumacher, his staff, and the Board of Directors for the NASC. Of the nearly 60 shows that I have attended over the years, this was one of the most professional, well run and educational events that I have ever attended. If you are involved in any capacity in the sports event industry, I highly advise you to mark your calendars for next year’s show to be held April 13 – 15, 2010 in Columbus, Ohio. In these times, it is important to surround yourself with good people and good ideas. At the NASC show, you will make things happen. For more information, visit www.sportscommissions.org.
