JAGUARS Pink Ribbon Symposium By Nick Thompson Breast cancer -a subject almost every woman, everywhere doesn't want to think about. Yet, Saturday morning (October 5th), over 500 women attended the 6th annual Pink Ribbon Symposium, held once again at the Thrasher-Horne Conference Center in Orange Park. More than 75 people waited in line before the doors opened at 8 AM. Admission was free to the public. The Pink Ribbon Symposium was founded by Dr. Linda Sylvester and Dr. Cynthia Anderson. The two-doctor panel spoke about the importance of early breast cancer detection, including self-examination, a patient's side effects that she may experience during and after treatments, plus how to maintain a healthy lifestyle post cancer. Like most illnesses, laughter is the best medicine, and this year two regional comediennes brought along a little of their own "treatment" -Gwen Templeton and Roz McCoy. Once inside the beautiful building, guests were Dr. Cynthia Anderson, Co-founder treated to a continental breakfast, between 8 AM and of Pink Ribbon Symposium 9 AM, on the right side of the main hall, while on the left side, double entrances led other guests to dozens of booths and exhibits on breast cancer news updates, improvements, and survival. One such exhibit was the Christina Phipps Foundation, whose mission is to "provide specialized training for yoga instructors to guide cancer patients and survivors through yoga therapy". The foundation has over 60 yoga instructors with 15 classes running a day. Aside from non-melanoma skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women.
