The Contributions of Eleven Individuals and Organizations are Honored by Special Olympics Florida at Annual Awards Ceremony in Orlando Special Olympics Florida is proud to recognize eleven individuals and organizations as recipients of annual Special Olympics Florida awards, including two volunteers who were inducted into the Special Olympics Florida Hall of Fame. Special Olympics Florida is supported by the unique skills and gifts of the people throughout the state; with their leadership we are able to provide continuing opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This year’s honorees were nominated and selected by members within the Special Olympics Florida organization and their unique and powerful contributions were celebrated at the annual Special Olympics Florida Leadership Conference in Orlando on July 19-20, 2013. Special Olympics Florida Hall of Fame -Presented to Carole McArthur from Miami-Dade County; Special Olympics Florida Hall of Fame -Presented to Roberta ‘Bobbi’ Wigand from Broward County; Coach of the Year -Presented to Jerome Thomas from Orange County; Athlete of the Year -Presented to Kevin Roundtree from Miami-Dade County; Youth of the Year -Presented to Katarina Zeigler from Clay County; Media Organization of the Year -Presented to Neighbor to Neighbor from Clay County; Marilyn Grigsby Award for Sustained Service -Presented to Marion County Medical Society from Marion County; Bill Crutchfield Award for Distinguished Service by a Volunteer -Presented to Deborah Bailey from Okaloosa County; Coaches Education & Athlete Training Award -Presented to Pam Enteman from Duval County; Sheriff Cal Henderson Law Enforcement Torch Run Award (State) -Presented to Florida Department of Corrections and Sheriff Cal Henderson Law Enforcement Torch Run Award (Local) Presented to Osceola County Sheriff’s Office. Founded in 1972, Special Olympics Florida provides year round sports training and competition to over 21,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities, at no cost to the athlete or their caregiver, as a means to achieve physical fitness, self-esteem and the life skills necessary to be productive, respected and contributing members of their communities. Continued on page 20 National Night Out is a community-police awareness-raising event in the US, held the first Tuesday of August. The event has been held annually since 1984 and is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch in the United States and Canada. The event is meant to increase awareness about police programs in communities, such as drug prevention, town watch, neighborhood watch, and other anti-crime efforts.
