Department of Plant & Environmental Sciences Departmental News Items April 2009, Vol. 1: Issue 4 In tro uctio d n: Welcome to the fourth Plant and Environmental Sciences Department accomplishment newsletter for 2009. This newsletter, along with the previous, more than indicate how productive our faculty, staff and students are. With the coming of spring, we have articles dealing with cropping systems: alfalfa freeze injury, chile research, pecan biomass, organic farming, and silage inoculation. We also have several reports related to student activities from novel teaching activities in horticulture to the World Café. O.A.S.I.S. students (Organization of Aggie Students Inspiring Sustainability) organized ‘conversation’ event to kick off NMSU’s Year of Sustainability. They hosted nearly 100 community members who discussed social, environmental and economic issues of sustainability. Spring means finals week will soon be upon us, and there are crops to get in the ground, and theses and dissertations to read. We are very busy this time of year. Nevertheless, it is critical we communicate our accomplishments with our constituents. Please take a few minutes to complete the “paperwork” on your efforts. These accomplishments will be shared with our constituents and administrators; especially the Regents and the Vice-President for Research. Please continue to submit your accomplishments to Jessica Phillips who organizes the Newsletter. Submit items directly to Jessica electronically (jessphil@nmsu.edu), and tell her which category should carry the news item. Where possible, include a pertinent photograph or visual aide. Thank you.
