The Accounting Link SCHOOL OF ACCOUNTANCYNEWSLETTER Available online at the School of Accountancy website: www.business.siu.edu/acct The Director’s View I am excited that we have published this newsletter and I hope that you will enjoy catching up on what is happening with the School of Accountancy. We have had a very busy year and there are a lot of changes that we are experiencing. First, I want to tell you that the School of Accountancy is doing great! This year INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Board of Advisors Associate Board Student Awards Accounting Career Fair Golf Scramble Accounting Society NABA BAP Internships New Faculty Faculty & Staff Accounting Circle 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 we have 315 undergraduates and 50 MAcc students, both our largest numbers ever. The school is the only unit in the college that is maintaining steady growth, and we expect to continue this growth in the future. The school has established a Freshman Interest Group (FIG) for incoming freshmen. This group of accounting students takes four courses together and are housed in Brown Hall at Thompson Point. Having this FIG allows freshmen to get involved earlier and helps to retain them in the program. As you most likely remember, the school has three active student organizations and they continue to amaze. You can read more about them later in this letter. We have great students in the school and they continue to impress me in everything they do. Every year, the school has the most students in the university that give up their spring break to participate in the Extern Program. I want to thank all our alumni who sponsor these students and allow them to experience the profession. We also have a significant number of our students who do internships each year. This is a wonderful opportunity for them to gain valuable experience and to make sure they have chosen the right career. You can read more about one internship experience later in this letter. I could take up the entire newsletter telling you about the great students in the school. An important part of the school is our alumni. I think we have the best alumni anywhere. I have had the pleasure of visiting several of you over the past few years and plan to visit more in the coming years. I am amazed at the generosity of our alumni in their willingness to give back their time and donations to support the school. The school has many new scholarships and professorships that have been funded by our alumni. Thank you. Several of our alumni serve on the school’s Board of Advisors. These alumni and friends give a tremendous amount of time and effort to help improve the school. We recently established an Associate Board for younger alumni to get more involved. If you are interested in being on these boards, please let me know. The Accounting Career Fair held every fall is a highlight of the year. The school is the only unit on campus to have a separate career fair and its importance is evident in the exceptional placement rate of our graduates. Many of you are responsible for getting your firm/company to recruit here. Thank you. The last component, but definitely not the least, is our faculty and staff. We have an excellent faculty in the school, with three new faculty joining us this year. You will be introduced to them and catch up with the others in this newsletter. There is so much more I would like to share. I encourage you to visit our website where you will find this newsletter along with some additional news. One item that I encourage you to read about is our new online Masters of Accountancy program which will start this fall. This will be a great opportunity for those who want to get their master’s degree, but cannot go back to school to get it. Go online and check it out. Again, I want to thank you for taking time to read this newsletter. You are a big part of the School of Accountancy and we appreciate you.
