“Pitchers and Catchers Report” TO MANY THIS IS MUSIC TO YOUR EARS. It is that great announcement that says winter is almost behind us and spring is around the corner. Soon fields across the country will be ripe with the cacophony of bats and balls. In this issue of SDM we take an in-depth look at Baseball and Softball organizations, the venues in which they play, and how to choose the right facility (our new Site Selection column). In it, Mary Helen Sprecher provides a thorough checklist for examining and evaluating baseball facilities, while Evan Shoemake provides an excellent overview of baseball and softball events nationwide. The most important aspects of all events are the safety and security of the participants and spectators. A leading expert in this field, Lou Marciani, tackles this topic with great insight and delivers solutions for effective safety management. Getting teams to the events is also important. Amy Henderson, in “Fundraising Creativity,” imparts unique ways teams and events can raise money (for themselves and for charity), even in a tough economy. Our Perspectives column provides a unique glimpse into the workings of sports commissions and CVBs. In this issue, Amy Cardwell discusses the value of volunteers and how a competent and caring group can make an event special. Not to be overlooked, we examine the worlds of Track & Field and Mountain Sports, as well as provide an overview of the Mountain West Region in an effort to show you where and how these events are successful. We welcome your feedback and are always looking for ways to improve. The Site Selection column premiering in this issue came directly from you, our readers, who wanted greater coverage of the site selection / decision-making process. Please keep the advice coming. In the meantime, it is time for pitchers and catchers to report….Spring Training is here! Sincerely,
