Chamber f oCus oN ... STANDARD PRESORT U.S. POSTAGE PAID PERMIT NO. 82 WOODSTOCK, VA JULY 2 0 12 • THE AWARD-WINNING PUBLICATION THAT COVERS THE GREATER FREDERICKSBURG BUSINESS COMMUNITY • VOLUME 30 • NUMBER 7 Virginia AG Cuccinelli to talk Supreme Court healthcare ruling with Chamber members about all of this when he addresses a Chamber audience at a July 10 breakfast meeting. The meeting will begin at 8 a.m. and will take place at the Freder-icksburg Country Club, 11031 Tidewater Trail. For more than two years, Mr. Cuccinelli has been one of the lead-ing players in America’s ongoing debate over healthcare and the U.S. Constitution. On March 23, 2010, his office filed suit against the PPACA in federal district court in Richmond. The suit contends that the act is unconstitutional due to its mandate that individuals purchase health insurance or face a fine. U.S. District Court Judge Henry E. Hudson ruled that the law’s in -dividual mandate is indeed uncon-stitutional. However, a three-judge panel of the Fourth District Court of Appeals rejected the lawsuit in Sep-tember 2011, declaring that Virginia lacked standing to sue. Mr. Cuccinelli’s office appealed the Fourth District Court’s ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court. However, the High Court chose instead to hear similar arguments in the case brought by 26 other states. Mr. Cuccinelli won election as Virginia’s Attorney General in No-vember 2009. He oversees the Of -fice of the Attorney General and its more than 300 attorneys and support staff. He served in the Senate of Virginia from August 2002 to January 2010.
