The heart of the Golden Crescent, “Where your recreational dreams come true"

This relaxed, picturesque harbor community on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario is the jumping-off point for open-water adventure in the 1000 Islands and St. Lawrence Seaway Region. Henderson Harbor is the heart of the “Golden Crescent,” a deep-water harbor renowned for its lofty vistas, sportfishing and vacation-retreat appeal.

Located in the town of Henderson, Henderson Harbor keeps watch over the great Lake Ontario, the last of the world’s greatest freshwater reservoirs. The community provides some of the finest open-water views in New York.

The secrets of Lake Ontario sportfishing lie beneath the surface and within Henderson Harbor, where local families tell tales of their ancestors serving as guides who rowed clients to their favorite spots to catch salmon, trout, bass, pike and perch. Their tales include past presidents and famous dignitaries. Today, charter captains take groups far onto Lake Ontario to fish for salmon, trout, walleye and bass.

Henderson Harbor is the center of Northern New York sail boating. The community is dotted with public launches and marinas that allow sailors, power boaters and pleasure vessels to enjoy their time on the water.

Henderson is a true treat for vacationers looking to relax and escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Waterfront cottages can be rented by the week. Small locally owned motels offer personal service. Campsites are strewn throughout and give vacationers a chance to slow down and enjoy the cool breezes and breath-taking sunsets over Lake Ontario. Rvs, popup campers and tents are welcome among the area’s three state parks and three privately operated campgrounds. Family reunions and waterside weddings are popular in Henderson Harbor. Waterfront restaurants provide satisfying dishes and perfect views over the water.

The community strives to make sure vacationers enjoy their stay. Block dances, classic car shows and onthe- water music performances and art shows are just a sampling of what it offers.

Henderson Harbor is on the Great Lakes Seaway Trail, a 518-mile American Byway that follows Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. Henderson is a particularly popular spot with bicyclists and motorcycle riders who stop to take in the vista views. Henderson is a short drive from Route 81, Sackets Harbor and Watertown. The 1000 Islands and Canada are within 30 miles.
