Back In The Day: Halloween
Becky Dumais
Just like every other holiday, things just aren’t they way they used to be (read simple), yet for all its commerciality, Halloween still gives us a way to have some fun – and outdo the neighbour’s cemetery on the front lawn.
GAMES These good old-fashioned halloween games don’t require much and can still be fun. All you need are some apples (or donuts and marshmallows), an imagination and legs (for running).
BoBBing for Apples
How it’s done: Get a bunch of apples and put them in a large tub of water. Players have their hands behind their back and try to grab an apple with their mouth. For little kids you can leave the stems in for easier gnawing – or just use marshmallows.
SnAp Apple
How it’s done: Tie strings around apples and suspend them from the ceiling or a tree (if it’s warm enough to do outside). Each player has to try to eat the whole apple without touching it with their hands. You could also give a prize to the person who gets the first bite. An easier, though messier, version is to use donuts.
Ghost in the grAveyArd
How it’s done: The designated ghost hides while the other players wait at the ‘safe spot’ (such as the front porch) and count, “One o’clock, two o’clock, three o’clock,” up to “Midnight” then search for the hiding ghost. The person who spots the ghost yells, “Ghost in the graveyard!” and everyone runs back to safety to avoid being tagged by the ghost. The first person to get tagged is the next ghost.
Apple pAss
How it’s done: It’s a relay game.
Line up players in two rows (same number of people in each line).
Players have to pass the apple to the person behind them only using their chin. If a team member drops the apple they start from the beginning again.
Post MorteM/Autopsy How it’s done: Blindfold everyone and pass around the ‘contents’ of a corpse and have each guest feel it while you tell a creepy story about the victim’s innards. Use peeled grapes for eyeballs, cold spaghetti for intestines, etc.
Way Back in the dAy The Victorians liked celebrating Halloween parties with fortune tellers.
Consider hiring a fortune teller or psychic for your party.
