-Denise Johnson

Summer is finally here and you and your family are ready to welcome it with open arms. Unfortunately, the economy is not so forgiving and your wallet is suffering as a result. So, how do you keep your spirits up and show yourself and your family a good time? Easy, there are many activities that you can take part in that are free or at the very least, affordable, located in your own hometown. So what are they, you ask? Well, check out the following activities you can do by yourself for a little R & R, or with your entire family.

TIP # 1 - Have you checked out your local museum lately? You should, because most museums offer family day where residents can get in for free. What a great way to pass some time on a hot summer day. Plus, you have the added benefit of learning something new since museums tend to change displays regularly.

TIP # 2 - Your local zoo may offer the same "get in free day" on a regular basis. Remember, it isn't necessary to buy your meals and snacks there, just pack a backpack with food and beverages and tell the kids you are going to picnic among the animals. They are guaranteed to enjoy it.

TIP # 3 - Check out your local park system to see if they offer summer outdoor concerts and movies. If they do, you can bet the events will be free of charge and all you need to bring is a blanket or chairs and a cooler. A fun night will be had by all.

TIP # 4 - Typically offered on Saturday mornings, your town's own farmer's market is a place to stroll - taking in the sights, sounds and smells of luscious fruits and vegetables as well as fragrant herbs. Why not bring some money along and do some of your shopping right there. The produce costs less, the freshness yields a tastier product and it's better for you since it is organic. A bonus is that you are also doing your environment a favor by buying locally grown food.

TIP # 5 - Go to the library. If you haven't been there lately you need to go. Why? Because they have a lot more than books these days. They have magazines, compact discs, and movies for all ages. Next time you decide to rent a movie, go to your local library and check one or more out. It will cost you nothing as long as you bring it back on time! An added benefit is that you can check out movies for longer than your video store allows you.

TIP # 6 - See if there are any First Friday events in your town. They may be hosted by neighborhood art galleries and are typically scheduled on the first Friday of every month. The galleries and stores will stay open longer allowing you to stroll in and out for free. The event is usually located in a particular neighborhood and there might even be a free trolley or bus ride to and from each gallery. Sometimes they will offer free appetizers and beverages too.

TIP # 7 - Have you ever taken a guided hike or walk before? Check out your local park system or library for information on walks or hikes scheduled for your area. Hosted by park or recreational department volunteers, the tours are informational and free. It doesn't hurt that you are getting exercise too. Just make sure you pre-register as they sometimes fill up or cancel.
